Have you ever seen my website has a new reCAPTCHA badge at the bottom-right corner? That is recent, I upgraded the reCAPTCHA on my website from v2 Checkbox to v3, it is a great idea. It also applies to my community project website.

I already registered the reCAPTCHA keys when I create my personal website but I didn’t install it. But until May. 2019, my website has too many spam comments and all of them have been filtered and deleted by the automated anti-spam system Akismet.

Then, I did maintenance on my website between Jun. 7, 2019 and Jun. 9, 2019, and I installed the reCAPTCHA v2 Checkbox on my website. And then the spam comments on my website became fewer and fewer.

While I am attempting to upgrade the reCAPTCHA to v2 Invisible or v3 during my United Kingdom summer camp, some new spam comments were came to my website, so I have to change back to v2 Checkbox.

Right now, my website starts using reCAPTCHA v3.

What is reCAPTCHA?

reCAPTCHA is a free service which is provided by Google and it can defend the spam robots on a website. It is short by Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart.

Robots usually send spam or too many requests on a website, so websites usually use the reCAPTCHA.

It has several versions. For instance, reCAPTCHA v2 Checkbox, v2 Invisible and v3. Unfortunately, reCAPTCHA v1 was gone.

reCAPTCHA Versions

v2 Checkbox

Users need to check “I am not a robot” checkbox before clicking a button on a website.

If reCAPTCHA doesn’t sure the user is a human or a robot, it will let the user do the further verification (e. g. images), otherwise, it will pass without further verification.

v2 Invisible

When users click the button, it may let the user do further verification like v2 Checkbox.

It has a badge, which usually shows at the bottom-right corner.

It returns a score from 0.0 to 1.0 without interrupting the user and user’s further verification. It also has a badge like v2 Invisible.

Why I use reCAPTCHA v2 instead of v3 before?

I only knew “I’m not a robot” checkbox before and I didn’t know the newest v3, and I was afraid that reCAPTCHA v3 can’t fully protect my website.

Also, I don’t know how to install and use reCAPTCHA v3 because of the programming issue.

Then, I successfully upgrade the reCAPTCHA on my website

After that, I understood the installation of reCAPTCHA v3 and how it works.

I got some advantages for this (e. g. users will not need to select “I am not a robot” checkbox or do picture verification), and I was happy to upgrade the reCAPTCHA to newest v3.

In the first few days, my website still had spam comments because the score was always 0.9, not accurate. Then I checked some documents and installed the reCAPTCA v3 properly, and spam comments were almost disappeared.

I know reCAPTCHA needs about 7 days after installation to adapt the website. In the first 7 days after installation, the score may not be accurate (always 0.9), this is normal.

Don’t be panic if you are seeing this

My website is protected by reCAPTCHA to reduce spam comments and emails.

If you are seeing this window, please keep calm because I need to let the spammers away from my website. If you are not a robot, you just need to try again and again in a few seconds.

Go away spammer message

I successfully upgraded the reCAPTCHA on my website, and I hope it can defend spam comments in the future.
